Completed in 1981, the Kalfus Studio was the first free-standing structure designed by Steven Ehrlich in Los Angeles. The studio's cubist forms foreshadowed design elements found throughout the firm's work and garnered the project wide critical attention.

Designed as a complement to a Richard Neutra house to the northwest, the 1,250 sf studio creates a dramatic counterpoint between a massive entry facade and an explosion of light and space inside, rendered through an innovative use of materials and technology.

The unadorned west elevation gives no hint of the naturally lit interior behind the door, characterized by a north-facing stair-step window and 14-foot high factory style windows on the east facade.

Ehrlich was marching to his own drum rather than to the beat of the national press based in the East.”
